In the six years since his previous album as #1 Dads, Tom Iansek has become a father in real life and relocated with his family from Melbourne to London. A few tracks on Every Little Fire have their origins in his initial trips to London to test the waters, giving the album somewhat of a scrapbook quality. The record also illustrates Iansek’s prowess as both a songwriter and arranger. Working with some collaborators but still largely in solo mode—as opposed to his work in the duos Big Scary and No Mono—he favors arrangements that feel at once sparse and ornate. Expect to hear strings, piano, and a bit of saxophone here, but never overdone. There’s also a gorgeous retro feel, from the ’70s singer-songwriter vibes of “Hard Questions” and the synth-led soft rock of “Nothing Less” to the tenderly sung soul of both “Love No Light” and the love song “Already Something.” Other quirkier, smaller moments stand out too, including an elegant rhyme involving the word Nintendo and a few stints of whistling. Yet Iansek grounds his playfulness in sincerity, always looking for a fresh spin to put on what feels like classic songcraft.
