After working behind the scenes for years with some of the biggest names in pop music worldwide, Jean Rodríguez and Danny Flores effectively managed to harness their powers for their own project, COASTCITY. The Puerto Rican duo’s eponymous 2018 EP offered a contrast with more reggaetón-focused contemporaries, as did its retro-futuristic album WILD AMERICANOS four years later. With SOÑAR DESPIERTO, the self-described soul caribeño act further enhances its musical mission of fusing R&B urgency with tropical transcendence. Though the runtime is fairly concise, that only reflects the focus and care put into the material, which begins wondrously with the gospel-tinged opener “YAHWEH” with ELENA ROSE. From there, they shift to collaborations with a variety of other like-minded vocalists, including Della Du on the vulnerable “NO TE ALEJES” and st. Pedro on the reflective title track. With or without guests, the pair provide smooth yet sensitive sentiments set to productions ideal for late-night beachfront vibes.
