Cancionero - EP

A tropically tinged covers set from the Tenerife-hailing singer. Considering how st. Pedro rose to prominence in Latin music off the strength of a Juanes cover, it makes sense that he would opt to continue down that path of reinvention. With the EP-length Cancionero, the Tenerife-hailing singer selects and reimagines a half-dozen songs from an international cross section of artists. Beginning with a salsa-fied take on Mexican pop act Camila’s hit single “Aléjate de mí,” he makes evident his intentions to position these tracks with an island mindset. That approach returns on “Sin miedo a nada,” transforming the outsized Alex Ubago signature into something more intimate. Elsewhere, he honors the aforementioned rocker with a version of fan favorite “Es por ti,” imbuing it with a tropical feel, while raising the tempo considerably for “Me dediqué a perderte.” For one of the project’s most memorable moments, he radically reinterprets Pablo Alborán’s cinematically sweeping “Solamente tú” into a comparatively more muted, though no less impactful, bachata ballad.
