With 10 songs in 11 minutes, the NY act mixes maximalism with minimalism. With the follow-up to their 2025 full-length debut 45 Pounds, NYC art-noise experimentalists YHWH Nailgun decided they needed only half the time to make their point. Magazine is a collection of 10 songs across just 11 minutes, each seemingly a fragment of a bigger, unrevealed whole and a testament to the short-attention-span theater in which we all reside. Opener “Ghost of Love” fades in as if from a program already in progress, all percussion and oscillating noise as vocalist Zack Borzone delivers a breathy sermon. Many songs end abruptly: the dramatic, dreamy “Innocent Sigh”; the moaning, lurching “Hips on a Wheel”; the spilling water collage of “Ballerina.” And it all comes in scraps and slivers: “Burns” sounds like a piece of an unreleased Talking Heads song played backwards in slow motion; closer “To the Devil” is like chopped and screwed Tom Waits. If you’re wondering where the rest of the song went, that’s probably the point.
