More Than You Think

More Than You Think

On their third album, More Than You Think, The Ember Days combine the folk-pop tunefulness of early Sixpence None the Richer with the indie rock expansiveness of Gungor, all in the service of a lovingly redemptive message. Since relocating to Nashville from their native New Zealand, the quintet have emerged as a worship band of unusual depth and individuality. Janell Belcher’s lead vocals blend delicacy and forcefulness to a remarkable degree, giving even her silvery soprano flights a sense of spiritual authority. As an ensemble, The Ember Days move deftly between the earthly and the ethereal, with Jordan MacKenzie’s drumwork deserving special praise for its subtle rhythms. Tracks like “I’ll Never Let Go” and “Sons and Daughters” fuse crisp beats with billowing textures, while “Awake” takes an assertive rock tack and “Real Jesus” brings in traditional gospel elements. The sparse elegance of “Face in the Dark” and “Lift Your Head” captures the band at its most dreamily reverent. More than simply testifying to their faith, The Ember Days seem to embody it with imaginative songwriting, precision playing and an overall sense of enraptured devotion.
