Bad Expectations

Ryan Howe of Punks on Mars apparently teleported straight out of 1983 into the '10s, with his skinny tie, '60s sunglasses, and L.A. power pop chords intact. POM's artwork, videos, and pop-culture accouterments implode in bright pinks and glaring yellows, with a messy, VHS/MTV-afterbirth aesthetic the icing on the party cake. Dude writes a punchy tune, too, along with his writing partner, bassist/vocalist Andrea Schiavelli. Their songs pack walloping guitar hooks and unexpected charms like harpsichord and thunderstorms (as in, an atmospheric event) into two-minute ear-bombs. Bubblegum, garage, and glitter also figure into breathless and wickedly sticky tunes like "She's a Glitter Punk," "Showers of Pain," and "Chandelier." If you miss the days of 20/20, Shoes, and The Jam, Punks on Mars will have you digging out those pink-and-black Converse hightops you put in the back of the closet instead of the Goodwill box. It's okay for them to come out now.
