My December

My December

“Since U Been Gone” proved Kelly Clarkson could hold her own against big riffs, and My December builds on that promise with acid-tongued rockers that have Jagged Little Pill’s bite and Evanescence’s goth-tinged roar. The spittle-flecked “Never Again” puts an ex on full blast; the stripped-down “Yeah” wears its menace lightly. The closer, “Irvine,” is delicate yet cathartic, Clarkson dropping her voice to a whisper as she bathes in longing. My December is a surprisingly satisfying left turn that tweaks Clarkson’s sweetheart image.
