On the grooving, French-sung Folila, Malian duo Amadou & Mariam boast their all-encompassing prowess on world-music eclecticism while straddling Western blues and rock edge. Laden with Mandé rhythms and intriguing fretwork, the galloping “Nebe Miri” digs into R&B influences, while the dolce “Chérie” slows the pace to a tender lullaby. But their most intricately layered track is the spirited “Dougou Badia,” which slyly maneuvers staccato nylon-stringed guitars with sliding electric syncopation.
