Since emerging in the ‘90s, the Cincinnati-based violinist and electronic musician Chih-Fu Spencer Yeh has put out numerous releases under various monikers. His best-known project is Burning Star Core, which often crafts compelling pieces that morph over extended periods of time. 2010’s Papercuts Theater draws its material from 66 recordings of live shows that took place from 1997 to 2008. Yeh, who works with a variety of collaborators here, has constructed an impressive four-part, hour-plus work from these fragments. The album is imbued with a sense of dramatic tension that’s created through the assemblage of countless sonic details. Part I hums with a variety of drones, while Part II comes charging out of the gate, a maelstrom of energized sound. Part III opens with layers of vocal elements that can hint at beatboxing. The cut is distinguished by its use of alto sax, trombone, and horn; the chattering instruments add welcome timbres to the mix. Part IV possesses an ominous quality that drifts into an almost folk-tinged section that features Yeh’s gorgeous violin: it’s the best thing here.
