The Garden State has birthed some of rock’s finest anthem-crafters, and Red Bank-born Brian Fallon is so ensconced in that group, he put the word in his band’s name. The fifth solo album from the leader of punk strivers The Gaslight Anthem pays tribute to his homeland’s restorative properties on its opening title track—“On the shore line, in the springtime/I come back to life,” he bellows over propulsive riffs—and digs into bridge-and-tunnel anxiety on the chugging “Nobody Likes You in NYC.” Fallon also shows off his eclectic background through Not Bad’s guest roster, which includes Americana powerhouse Lori McKenna on the gnarled “On Good Terms,” guitar savant Marc Ribot on the brawling “Wolf by the River,” and fellow Springsteen enthusiast Brandon Flowers on “Love at the End of the World,” a ruminative trip to the badlands with the two singers joining together for exquisite harmonizing.
