Dr*gs R Bad

Dr*gs R Bad

The Chicago native dropped his first mixtape, Alternative Trap, in the summer of 2013, a time when hometown heroes like Chief Keef and Chance the Rapper had become national stars. By comparison, Lucki’s dreamy, drifty trap music sounded obscure, but in the long run, it had legs. His slurry, half-awake style predicted that of legions of SoundCloud rappers to come, and his first two official albums (2022’s FLAWLESS LIKE ME and 2023’s s*x m*ney dr*gs) both crept into the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 chart upon their respective releases. The title of Lucki’s fourth album is something of a paradox: Sure, Dr*gs R Bad, but they sound pretty good when invoked in his signature mumble over blunted cloud-rap beats. On “No Stars in Maybachs,” he’s joined by Veeze and Rylo Rodriguez for a contest of who can rap with the most narcotized drawl. Through the haze, striking one-liners manage to grab your attention: “I got last night on my eyes, trying to get it out my face,” he raps over dreamy chopped-and-screwed soul on “Yesterday on My Face.”
