Bandera Blanca

Bandera Blanca

The música mexicana star bravely navigates a romantic minefield. A white flag generally signifies surrender, admitting defeat and conceding to the opposition. Leave it to the immensely talented Christian Nodal to convert this concept into something closer to a personal victory on the title track for his latest album, Bandera Blanca, in which he yields to a lover’s chaos only to liberate himself from her. Throughout the 13-track effort, the música mexicana star navigates a romantic minefield of sorts. From longing for a love beyond his reach on “Una Mujer Como La Suya” to feeling utterly resigned to his fate on “Miel Con Licor,” the lows conveyed here are as devastating as they are relatable. Yet none of this tragedy is possible without initially experiencing deeply heartfelt emotions firsthand, with one’s capacity for sharing true love evident on “Lo Que Se Dice Amor” and “Un Vals.” Still, the devotion Nodal sings of on these songs seems downright gargantuan, inadvertently foreshadowing the chasm into which he stands to fall should the relationship fail.
