The avant-pop shapeshifter gets into the groove. Since releasing her Polaris-winning breakthrough, La Papessa, in 2016, Lido Pimienta has developed a reputation for being such a fearlessly experimental artist and outspoken advocate for the disenfranchised that it can be easy to overlook the sheer beauty of her voice. But that quality is front and center on Caribenya, which follows 2025’s weighty orchestral excursion La Belleza with a more accessible set of rhythmic-forward yet dreamy pop songs that feel as light as air. The album title explicitly telegraphs its guiding aesthetic by mashing up the word “Caribbean” with a shout-out to New Age icon Enya, and the cumbia-flavored confection “Tóxica” and dembow-driven delight “Marea” make good on that cross-continental promise, working the hips while soothing the soul. And after Pimienta appeared on Nelly Furtado’s 2024 comeback album, 7, Furtado returns the favor here by guesting on “Hoy Por Tí,” where two generations of alt-pop fusionists come together under a blissful digital-reggae groove.
