Renascence describes renewal, rebirth, a fresh start. In short, a renaissance, which shares the Latin root “renasci” with the title of The Durutti Column’s first album in 16 years, Renascent. Led by the inimitable Manchester-based guitarist Vini Reilly, Renascent both confirms the band as pioneers of boundary-pushing rock-adjacent music, and establishes their penchant for exploration, almost 50 years into the group’s career. Renascent is gentle and calming, more contemplative than much of the band’s earlier output. Take “Your Shadow at Morning,” which pulses with echoing choral synths and Reilly’s nylon string improvisations. The charming “Sargasso Sea” is built around a warm piano melody, atop which guest vocalist Caoilfhionn Rose sings of a vision as enchanting as the music that accompanies her. “In a pea-green boat, just you and me/Across the wide Sargasso Sea/Round and round the circle of life.” Our Favourite Track: The hazy trip-hop of “Liars.”
