With their second album, Gurriers sound primed to follow fellow Dublin indie heroes Fontaines D.C. up to the higher font tiers of festival posters. Co-produced by Mark Bowen of IDLES and Geese associate Loren Humphrey, Nobody’s Coming to Save You executes a frenetic fusion of post-punk shout-speak, Britpop bravado, and arena-ready alt-rock anchored by the band’s intensely charismatic singer, Dan Hoff. On the title track, “Nobody’s Coming to Save You,” Gurriers wield a sinister swagger that recalls Arctic Monkeys’ harder-edged moments, while “Pins” sees Hoff revealing his innermost desires over a booming drum break with Richard Ashcroft-worthy gusto. And whether they’re dishing out anti-colonialist dance-punk (“Party Lines”), bruised power ballads (“I Wish I Was”), or multi-sectional art-rock epics (“Drones”), Gurriers’ world-conquering ambitions are unrelenting. Our Favorite Track: “Nothing Happens Twice”—the sort of mosh-pit-stoking rager that’s tailor-made for Hoff to point his mic to the crowd for the chorus and have them shout it back at him.
