Pop music has been playing with fire for ages. From Billy Joel to BTS, the symbolism of an inferno is too tempting for musicians to resist as a metaphor for everything from the persistence of social unrest to the power of bucking against tradition. In their third EP since debuting as a group in 2022, J-pop group &TEAM makes a play for a blazing metaphor. “We on Fire” is the title of both their album and their lead single, giving members EJ, Fuma, K, Nicholas, Yuma, Jo, Harua, Taki, and Maki an excuse to sing about the flames of their ambition. While the HYBE boy group has been known for anthemic, pop-rock frenzies that drive their werewolf lore, they lead with a comparatively subdued sound here. On We on Fire, &TEAM trades surging synths for trendy trap beats, giving their supernatural storytelling a moodier vibe.
