A fusion of metals: groove, symphonic, death, and nu. “Some motherfuckers have it so easy/They never learn the hard way.” So says DevilDriver lead singer Dez Fafara on “Strike and Kill,” the title track to the band’s 11th album. The follow-up to 2023’s Dealing with Demons, Vol. II sees Fafara returning with an entirely new lineup, including founding bassist Jon Miller. Twin shredders Alex Lee (ex-Holy Grail) and Gabe Mangold lead the way on Strike and Kill, laying down hammer-smash riffs and dizzying leads on “Dead in the Water,” “Ride or Die,” and (especially) murderous opener “Dig Your Own Grave.” The band takes a moody acoustic turn on the first half of “Summoning Shadows” before exploding with demonic fury. Closer “All Bets Are Off” offers a tech-heavy sampler platter of DevilDriver’s fusion of metals: groove, symphonic, death, and nu.
