Detour

Experimenting with grungy, industrial sounds largely handled by longtime collaborators Two Fresh and Pera, Samara Cyn delivers a variety of plates: boastful rapping about labels’ desperate attempts to replicate her style (“BUSHWICK”), tenderly singing about the personal and professional turbulence on her road to success (“Highest”), catchy reflections on the honeymoon stage of a romance gone sour (“Good Is A LIE”). She even leans into diaristic, metaphor-laden spoken-word poetry (“Nomad”). The seven-song EP’s title Detour is fitting: There’s both straightforward and implied acknowledgment of exploring the unknown, an appropriate tone for a kid who geographically relocated frequently and who refuses to let herself be locked into a box artistically. Conformity and staying in one place are the steepest offenses for Samara Cyn, and she says as much on “over influence”: “You bitches funky, you bitches mold/Y’all mind these n****s and do what you’re told/I would never let a weak-minded bitch in my home.” Whatever direction Samara Cyn turns the wheel, she steers with conviction.
