A quarter-century into their inventive collaboration as Hermitude, Angus Stuart and Luke Dubber have turned in a remarkably tight and focused eighth album. The Blue Mountains pair are still happy to cherry-pick from varied subgenres of electronic and hip-hop music, but all in the service of a communal dance-floor experience. Eight also features a guest vocalist on around half the tracks, yet those contributions never overshadow Hermitude’s intricate mechanics. Perth-based Afropop singer Adrian Dzvuke lends his high, soft delivery to two songs, while Sydney artist DEVAURA provides the romantic heart of the sleek, thumping “For the Night.” Stuart and Dubber have always excelled at slotting rappers into their bustling sonic universe, and this album opens with the one-two hit of California MC Wes Period fronting the bass-wobbled party anthem “All That” before English duo Bob Vylan ignite the high-energy “Light Up.” But this being Hermitude, there’s ample room reserved for the comedown, as heard via the final two tracks. After that punchy opening attack and a quite kinetic midsection, the veteran duo knows how to bring this record gently back down to Earth.
