On their 15th album, Floridian death metal vets Six Feet Under serve up a collection of songs split into two self-described categories: death and groove. “Mister Blood and Guts” and “Mutilated Corpse in the Woods” exemplify the former, providing high-speed death metal steeped in gore and violence, while “Skin Coffins” and “Grasped from Beyond” evoke the midtempo grooves that SFU threw down on their early albums Haunted and Warpath. As always, the lyrics are bloody as hell, with tales of victims overtaking killers (“Unmistakable Smell of Death”), gruesome mutilations (“Next to Die”), and brutal murders in which vocalist Chris Barnes references his own lyrics from his ’80s origins in Cannibal Corpse (“Naked and Dismembered”).
