You’re Free to Go

After the darkly shaded sounds of 2023’s The King, Anjimile Chithambo’s third full-length and second for indie powerhouse 4AD sounds airy and openhearted—a sense of freedom that’s reflected in the album title itself, which gestures towards Chithambo’s embrace of a non-monogamous lifestyle. With Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Hurray for the Riff Raff) behind the boards, Anjimile’s off-kilter approach to indie folk achieves new levels of warmth as he explores lyrical themes of transphobia (“Ready or Not”), the journey of gender identity (“Waits for Me”), and the distance caused by familial estrangement (“Exquisite Skeleton”). Listen closely to catch Sam Beam of Iron & Wine, a clear forebear for Anjimile’s sound, as he contributes backing vocals on closing track “Enough.”
