Maldorör Disco

Maldorör Disco

After calling it quits in the wake of 2018’s Fascinator, Czech black-metal veterans Master’s Hammer have returned from their self-imposed grave. Those who thought the highly experimental band reached peak weirdness with 1995’s polka-meets-circus-music Slagry might think again when they hear Maldorör Disco, which is—you guessed it—a disco album with more synthesizers than guitars. Taken in sequence, tracks like “Genesis P. Orridge” (named after the late founder of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV), the John Carpenter-esque “Take It or Leave It,” and the Kraftwerkian title track sound more like a UFO-themed, Rammstein-backed dance party than a metal record—but we suspect that’s exactly what Master’s Hammer’s fearless ringleader Franta Storm had in mind.
