In releasing their first full-length in over 20 years, Swedish black/death metal squad In Aeternum proves they are alive and blasphemous as ever. The title …of Death and Fire references fellow Swedes and departed black metal OGs Bathory, but songs like “The Vile God of Slime” and “The Hourglass” offer a more modern melding of extreme metal as guitarist/vocalist David Larsson, lead guitarist/bassist Daniel Nilsson-Sahlin, and drummer Perra Karlsson summon their deep knowledge of and experience within the death and black metal microcosms of the last 35 years. In a final nod to the band’s musical ancestry, closer “To Those Who Have Rode On” raises a glass to fallen metal warriors of yore and features a cameo from Watain mastermind Erik Danielsson.
