Oh. What. Fun. is a movie about the exigencies and anxieties of Christmas with a pointed twist—this time, Mom gets revenge. That sharp deviation from a seemingly familiar Christmas premise warrants a soundtrack that likewise offers the unexpected. How about Weyes Blood drifting into the psychedelia of a Mamas and Papas cover, or Lorely Rodriguez (Empress Of)’s thumping take on “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” serving as the chaser for Jeff Tweedy’s bittersweet crawl through The Band’s beautiful “Christmas Must Be Tonight”? It may at first seem like heresy to hear Fleet Foxes glide through “Angel in the Snow,” an early Elliott Smith cast-off about lingering at the edge of addiction. But Oh. What. Fun. largely depends on finding wintry moods in unlikely places. Sure, Uwade sways through Elton John’s ebullient “Step Into Christmas,” and, over gracefully coiled keyboard lines, St. Vincent finds a perfect intersection of earnestness and suspicion during “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” But with The Attachment Theory at her back, Sharon Van Etten nails December’s grand sense of longing on the Pretenders’ “2000 Miles.” And squaring up to the Everly Brothers’ devastating obscurity “Christmas Eve Can Kill You,” Madi Diaz and Andy Shauf together ring the bell for a little charity and humanity, for finding a way to make the world a little sweeter in a season that can feel like soot for so many. Aside from a pair of Gwen Stefani originals that add pep to the start and middle, there’s a novel twist to these tracks—the cast takes a few tunes for a spin, too. The Wang family sounds exquisite during “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” and “Silent Night,” while Dominic Sessa tries his hand at a little Mark Kozelek-meets-Tenacious D for the finale. Oh. What. Fun.. is a string of surprising delights.
