When &TEAM debuted in 2022, the HYBE boy band led with an emo-rock sound that fit their werewolf concept. Three years later, when the J-pop group made their official Korean debut with EP Back to Life, the nine members returned to those angsty origins. “Back to Life” leans into a midtempo moodiness for its tale of instinct-driven rebirth, but the vibes get immediately brighter with the funky hip-hop track “Lunatic.” Elsewhere on the eclectic six-track album, members EJ, Fuma, K, Nicholas, Yuma, Jo, Harua, Taki, and Maki ask a would-be lover for clarification on the retro R&B track “MISMATCH” before accelerating into the intentional sonic chaos of “Rush.” Album-enders “Heartbreak Time Machine” and “Who am I” show a softer side of &TEAM as they get introspective about love.
