Blondshell’s companion to her sophomore album, If You Asked for a Picture, brings in some like-minded collaborators to add new layers of context when it comes to Sabrina Teitelbaum’s confessional and whip-smart songwriting style. Singer-songwriter Gigi Perez joins her for a stripped-down take on the searing “Arms,” and genre-spiritual kin Samia hops on a distinctly new spin on “23’s a Baby,” with whirring electronic distortion and vocoder’d vocalizations couching the original’s skyscraping chorus. Aussie indie outfit Folk Bitch Trio and Conor Oberst (the latter as much of an influence on Teitelbaum and her peers as any contemporary artist) offer their own distinctive takes on “Change” and “Event of a Fire,” respectively. Meanwhile, the brand-new “Berlin TV Tower” is all guitar-chug hookiness underneath Teitelbaum’s lyrical exultations to “Relax, you don’t shrink anymore,” making for a worthy addition to her catalog.
