All of a sudden in 2025, following the output of Jay Electronica became a full-time job. Rap’s most tantalizing what-if story, whose only full-length albums came back in 2020, brought some fireworks to the rap world when he unveiled a bevy of new projects half a decade after that first drop. At the heart of these releases is A Written Testimony: Leaflets, a collection that begins with “Abracadabra,” which shares a name with a very famous grail within the halls of Jay Electronica’s discography. Originally released in 2008 and produced by J Dilla, that song helped establish the New Orleans-bred MC as one of rap’s sharpest lyricists. Almost two decades later, “Abracadabra” features new lyrics and a new beat, though Jay once again brings the heat. He acknowledges that new releases have become a rare occurrence during the introductory sample, but that’s not to suggest he can’t bring the wrath when he finally decides to grace listeners with an album: “Abracadabra, Houdini and David Blaine ain't got nothing on gang,” he raps. “I came in the name who made earthquakes and rain.”
