On his latest EP, A-Reece’s minimalist approach lays his expression bare. Business as Usual feels unhurried, with soul samples wailing and luxurious keys twinkling as he reflects on his life and career with clarity. On “So Much,” he vows to tether himself to music and authenticity, his bigger purpose. It’s refreshing self-awareness from the South African rapper who’s never tried to be everything at once. “Never filled up stadiums but the music is fillin’ voids/Used to be broke and anxious, now I’m rich and paranoid,” he raps on “Losses.” However, the album’s true emotional heart is “Scented Candles/Well Done, Dada,” where Reece raps, “If my father was still alive hе’d be proud of his mijo/Putting the family first has always been part of the еthos” and goes on to rap about his connection to his mother, an entry point to explore his own experience of parenthood. “Such a priceless moment just to look at your mother feed you,” he raps about his daughter. But it doesn’t end at reflecting on family, as the project features both of his blood brothers, Jay Jody and KID KAYDENCE alongside the rapper K.Keed and singer Kwazi M. Business as Usual allows Reece to take breathers through instrumental interludes, making the big moments feel earned and land harder.
