Maison Rouge

Maison Rouge

In Maison Rouge opener, “Violence,” Mr Eazi is caught in a tug-of-war between the expectations of a lover and staying true to himself. We don’t get a resolution there before the beguiling guitars on “Wait for Your Love” usher in calmer waters by way of production work from P.Priime. Then comes “Casanova,” a humorous tale of a man faced with the consequences of his vices. Mr Eazi listeners who’ve accompanied the Port Harcourt-hailing singer through the phases that have defined his output since 2013’s mixtape About to Blow could always count on storytelling that was equal parts colorful and comical. The singer’s wit is fully intact across Maison Rouge, as is Banku, the midtempo blend of Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian Afropop he pioneered. But it’s been balanced by real life, including the loss of his mother and a marriage to his long-term partner. We feel that heft the most on closer “Love Me Now,” where Eazi lays his grief bare, reminding us, “Omo na when you don lose person/Then you go know say you love person.”
