Don’t Cry Because It’s Over

When it comes to the joys of feel-good romantic cinema, preternaturally talented singer-songwriter Will Linley is really no different than the rest of us. According to his Instagram, Linley’s debut, Don’t Cry Because It’s Over, could also work as “the soundtrack to your new favorite rom-com.” And he’s not wrong. From lush opener “Cinematic” to the appropriately titled closer “Last Thing I Do,” Linley crafts an at times energetic yet always hopeful—and sensitive—story. You’re sure to feel the flush of excitement; the blush of romance; and the inevitable disappointment of parting across songs like “How It Starts” (“I always thought we were just friends/I never thought that we’d ever be more than that”) and the regretful “First Love” (“Now I’m standing in the kitchen, let it really sink in/We’ll never dance here again”). You should have an idea of how things are going to play out by the time you reach the re-energizing “Just Like That,” but if the overly sincere chords of the aforementioned “Last Thing I Do” happen to catch you off guard, just remember: Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.
