Metallica’s 1983 debut is beyond influential. Not only did Kill ’Em All kick off the thrash movement; it inspired countless metal bands for the next four decades—and counting. But No Life ’Til Leather underscores a phenomenon that few bands of any genre can claim: Metallica is so revered that they’re covered not only by their contemporaries—like Testament doing “Seek & Destroy” and ex-Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson reproducing Metallica’s departed spiritual leader Cliff Burton’s immortal bass solo, “(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth”—but also by bands that influenced Metallica in the first place.
