PANIA’s spacey, self-reflective R&B deepens and matures on this EP, with the West Melbourne artist reacting to major changes within both herself and her inner circle. Helmed by Sydney producer Aywy, the slow and moody opener “Switch sides” laments the friends PANIA has lost as her career has taken flight, before “Pity Party” doubles as a relationship postmortem that questions her own choices as much as others’. (The latter also saw her return to her Aotearoa New Zealand hometown of Maungatapu to shoot the video.) But after the melancholy undertow of “Loner,” Coming 2 Terms begins to do just that with “Pretty Girl Fly,” a slinky slice of self-empowerment co-written with Kota Banks and produced by Chelsea Warner. It sets the table for the closing title track, which wishes its subject the best despite all the history between them. PANIA approaches the nuances of personal and sexual politics with sustained consideration, creating a five-song narrative arc that suggests she’s fully ready to leave the past behind her.
