WayV has big band energy. The Mandopop crew is a subunit of K-pop supergroup NCT, which had 25 members at the time of WayV’s BIG BANDS release. As the China-based NCT subgroup, however, WayV numbered six members (KUN, TEN, WINWIN, XIAOJUN, HENDERY, and YANGYANG) when their seventh mini album debuted. (WINWIN, who was focusing on his acting career in China at the time of the album’s release, did not participate in BIG BANDS.) With BIG BANDS’ title track—featured in both Chinese-language and Korean-language editions—the subunit brags that they don’t need a big band to have a big-band impact, buoying NCT’s signature hip-hop swagger with dramatic flourishes of brass. The party rhythm continues with the fun, funky English-language pop song “Ice Tea” and ’90s-inspired hip-hop track “WOAH.” WayV gets melancholic with the breakup track “Sad Eyes” before finding a light in the darkness in the form of their fandom WayZenNi on the acoustic pop track “Your Song.”
