Further From the Country

Further From the Country

Indigenous stories are often left out of conversations about country music, a glaring omission given the genre’s roots in storytelling, place, and celebration of regional cultures. William Prince is one of several up-and-coming Indigenous artists bringing their stories to the forefront, drawing inspiration from his upbringing in Peguis First Nation, Manitoba. This follow-up to 2023’s Stand in the Joy finds Prince continuing to pull on narrative threads from that LP—written after losing his father—including reflections on grief, time, and community. Produced by Liam Duncan, Further From the Country opens with its title track, a woozy, noirish account of leaving home that makes ample use of Prince’s range and agility as a vocalist. “For the First Time” is rich and melodic, like a John Prine song shrouded in darkness. “Flowers on the Dash” ups the pace and the playfulness, with some classically twangy electric guitar for good measure. Prince closes the album with “More of the Same,” an openhearted account of inviting goodness and gratitude into one’s life.
