“For a Chinese person, the Lunar New Year is the most important day of the year,” Vinida Weng tells Apple Music. In 2025, the rapper and singer-songwriter marks the annual intersection of tradition, new beginnings, reunions, and relaxation with an Apple Music Session featuring new takes on two of her own songs. From her 2022 Afrobeats-inspired EP ONE LIFE ONLY she’s chosen “MoJiaDai,” a song written in the language of Fuzhou, Fujian province. “It’s a song I wrote for my hometown,” she says, “and it’s special to me because it was my first time writing in Fuzhounese. I’m really excited about this rock-band rerecording.” She’s also radically reinterpreted “Awaken Me”— the folk-flavored synthwave opener from her 2024 concept album 7th Seed—as a stripped-back, unplugged number. Both performances originate from a sense of play, which is Weng’s guiding principle for making music. “As long as I’m having fun, I’m happy,” she says. “I don’t have much experience with rock-band arrangements, especially in my album music. This is a great chance to try something new.” The artist and her team took advantage of concert rehearsals to record the new tracks. “We were already working on live arrangements, so adding and arranging new elements and recording these two tracks was fun for all of us.”
