“People may know me for my typical dark style, but in my own life I listen to lots of chill, relaxed, groovy pop,” Anti-General—the Chengdu native and experimental electronic producer also known as Ziqi Zhong—tells Apple Music. “That’s what I want to share this new year. I’m integrating local music with a LNY feel into electronic dance tracks to make holiday fun for the whole family,” he says. Zhong believes that a broad aesthetic sensibility—and an appetite for a wide range of styles—is essential for any good producer or DJ. “I bring in other [genres] to add more dimensions to the listening experience,” he says, before reinforcing this philosophy from his perspective as an audience member: “When I’m listening to DJ sets, I’m hoping to be surprised.” When DJing live, Zhong is attuned to the way the sounds resonate in a physical space—but his concerns are slightly different for a mix meant to be streamed. “The audience is probably listening through headphones or a home speaker system, so I tend to avoid more extreme music,” he says. “I’ll make sure it all sounds pretty good through my Bluetooth speaker.”
