The Revival was Royce’s first-ever EP, but the Detroit MC already had more than a decade of experience in the rap game, plus cosigns from Eminem and DJ Premier. His veteran status shows on these four tracks of ominous, brass-heavy boom bap: “I’m willing to do what you won’t do, I’m old school,” he proudly proclaims on “Street Hop 2010.” Best is “The Warriors,” featuring his newly formed group, Slaughterhouse (Royce, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, and Crooked I), who split eight tough-talking verses over sultry, blaxploitation-style funk.
