Longevity can be a tricky goal for any Latin pop act. In the decade-plus that followed their eponymous 2012 debut, Piso 21 maintained relevance and increased prominence while so many of their peers and challengers struggled to keep either. Part of the Colombian group’s success came via choice collaborations and savvy producer partnerships, benefitting from the growth of reggaetón and related sounds by integrating their existing strengths within the wider movement. On 2.1, their boy-band beginnings have fully receded, leaving behind a more mature and formidable unit. The ICON-produced opener “ANTES” exemplifies their refined approach, cushioning the dembow-driven thump with soothing and soaring vocals. That character quality extends to other sleek reggaetón variants like “ME SIENTO HIGH” and “PERREO EN BOTE” as well as their catchy collaborations with hitmakers Ozuna on “FICHAJE DEL AÑO” and Wisin on “LA MISIÓN.” A handful of acoustic takes round out the album, a reminder of how adaptable Piso 21 remains at this stage in their career.
