Darell 2024

Darell 2024

Amid an American election year where several reggaetoneros of note publicly endorsed candidates, Darell mischievously puts forward a third-party contender—himself. Despite his very presidential pose on the cover, the Puerto Rican genre mainstay remains more interested in perreo than politics across this 16-song effort. Coming some 14 months after EVERYBODY GO TO THE DISCOTEK, Darell 2024 focuses his proverbial ground game on the dance floor with thumping fare like “Gritos.” His lyrical themes largely remain as clubcentric as his instrumental choices, evident from opener “Sexy Sensual” onwards. At times, he looks towards some of Colombia’s production hitmakers for inspiration, with SOG on “Diablo Trepau’” and The Rudeboyz on “Somos Iguales.” Still, his penchant for more tropical sounds comes through on the dancehall chill of “Real” and the slowed-down hybrid “Enemigo.” But even while exploring Afrobeats and Jamaican sounds, he reinforces his street-level trap edge opposite Lil Geniuz on “Profugo.”
