For his Apple Music Session, TOBi delivers a unique take on “B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad),” the lead single from Outkast’s classic 2000 album Stankonia. This acoustic reading might have slowed the original’s pace and tamed its barrage of drums but it retains all of the Atlanta duo’s arresting urgency—perhaps because today, more than 20 years on, TOBi understands the song better than he ever did. “I remember watching the video as a kid and being so confused but awestruck by the pace and vivid colors,” the Toronto rapper/singer tells Apple Music. “It was such a frenetic experience, and I didn’t quite understand what was going on. I just knew I liked it. Revisiting that song as an adult was amazing because now I could peel the layers back and see how many ways Outkast really killed that record. That’s what I’d like kids who listen to my music to come away with—something they can revisit many years later and recontextualize.” Presented here in acoustic form, “Someone I Knew,” the impassioned opener to TOBi’s 2023 album PANIC, is one such song that could continue to resonate and find new meaning with fans as they listen to it in the coming years. “That’s how I feel about ‘Someone I Knew,’” he says. “I think it’s a heavy song, but I want whoever listens to it to feel lighter at the end. Like a weight has been lifted.”
