Rowena Wise grew up in a musical household. A luthier by trade, her father crafted custom guitars for her while her folk-musician mother provided her own indelible influence. Wise even partook in a touring family band at a young age, before relocating from coastal Western Australia to Melbourne at age 18 to carve her own path. After releasing several indie-pop singles as Ro, she embraced her given name and leaned into songwriting so confiding that it can almost feel intrusive to listen in. That’s certainly the vibe of her Australian Music Prize-nominated debut album. The opening “In for the Kill” introduces us to where Wise is at now musically—oh-so-sparse in arrangements, yet devastating in her depictions of relationship woes—before she twists the knife further on “Forgiving Up” (“I’ll forgive you for giving up”) and “Indifferent” (“If we meet again one day, I will be indifferent and you’ll be the same”). Produced by Robert Muiños, who has assisted similar feats of intimacy for Didirri and Julia Jacklin, Senseless Acts of Beauty is a quietly confident showcase for Wise’s no-frills songwriting and cathartic singing.
