Nocturnal

Nocturnal

During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, more music was written for the lute than any other instrument. Jakob Lindberg’s beautifully intimate recording takes Nocturnal After John Dowland, Benjamin Britten’s modernist tribute to the 17th-century giant of the lute, as its focus, alongside works from the mid- to late-16th century. Intricate variations by Elizabeth I’s now largely forgotten court lutenist Edward Collard and the equally lesser-known John Danyel give a window onto a once thriving, rich English music landscape. They’re topped by the evergreen works of Dowland, including the exquisite, melancholic Farewell.
