Rachmaninoff: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 3

Rachmaninoff: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 3

Good things come to those who wait. Yevgeny Sudbin concludes his Rachmaninoff piano concerto series in London with the two most popular works, and with a BBC Symphony Orchestra in impressively good form. Sudbin’s an elegant, subtle player who rises effortlessly to the occasion when confronted with a late-romantic thoroughbred, as both these concertos undeniably are. Melodies surge as if on the crest of a wave, but they also sing gloriously. And the challenging Third seems to present few problems for this virtuoso. Sakari Oramo is a characteristically attentive and imaginative partner on the podium. Nicely balanced sound too.
