Pianist Yevgeny Sudbin here offers a beautifully conceived love letter to Tchaikovsky. Featuring a number of transcriptions, his album begins with music Tchaikovsky himself loved: Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila, played with terrific verve and fire. Its closing piece, the fantasy-overture Romeo and Juliet, is without doubt the highlight, a tour de force as a transcription, and played with a breathtaking array of colors and imaginative touches. In between comes a series of shorter pieces, Tchaikovsky at his most charming, including a couple of items with Sudbin’s 12-year-old daughter Bella, proving that musicality runs in the family.
