Meaning “together we sing” in the Yanyuwa language, Arrkula Yinbayarra assembled to preserve that and other endangered First Nations languages. The community project began with proud Wardaman and Yanyuwa woman Dr Shellie Morris AO collaborating with the Woman’s Cultural Song Group and Tiwi Strong Women Choir for a 2022 festival performance in Borroloola, a remote town in Australia’s Northern Territory. Celebrating the traditional languages and cultures of the Yanyuwa, Marra, Garrwa, and Gudanji people, the acclaimed concert eventually prompted this debut album. Guided by Morris, who has spent decades touring and performing First Nations music, the project’s robust group singing is complemented by modern touches like disco-style guitar on opener “All Together We Sing” and the perky electronic beat anchoring several songs. There are also some English lyrics on such tracks as “A-Kurija” and “Keeping Our Culture Strong,” restating the need to maintain traditional cultures. Set against strummed folk pop, “Barkly Tablelands” communicates a strong sense of place while recounting white intervention in the titular region. Despite the difficulties described, the album’s central theme of cultural pride triumphs in the closing refrain: “’Cause the truth is, we’re the backbone of this country.”
