Matt Joe Gow’s fifth album taps into barroom Americana with both confiding closeness and a live-in-the-room warmth. Now based in Melbourne, the Aotearoa New Zealand singer/songwriter once more proves to be an expert study in many distinct derivations of country and folk music. Ruddy with reverb and pedal steel, the romantic devotional “’Til My Whole Heart Bursts” borrows the title of Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up in Blue” in passing, while Gow cites Johnny Cash and Drive-By Truckers alike as influences on its ringing earnestness. Likewise, a bold harmonica salvo leads “Go Ahead, Celebrate” closer to Black Crowes territory, and the “Wild Horses”-esque ballad “Nyjj” channels The Rolling Stones’ ruffled flirtations with country. Other tracks see Gow draw directly from his own past songbook: “Like the Rains” was originally penned for his 2009 debut The Messenger but ultimately deemed too dark for that particular batch, whereas “Sweet Collapse” is a resolute sequel to 2016’s “Georgia Rose.” Such subtle touches only bring us deeper into Gow’s self-aware corner of the world, where he can trade licks with some of the genre’s absolute legends on his own way to greatness.
