Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? was a major turning point for Kevin Barnes and of Montreal. It was here that Barnes lustily embraced the kinetic keyboards and throbbing funk of Dirty Mind-era Prince, singing “Let’s all melt down together” on the hyperactive “Suffer for Fashion” and turning the spotlight toward his own damaged relationships on tracks like “The Past Is a Grotesque Animal.” He even coins an anthem for antidepressants on the cheerleading synth-pop single “Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse.”
