When you think of rappers who are innovative users of Auto-Tune, you likely imagine the ones who push the effect to its obvious, outlandishly robotic extremes—like Future, Young Thug, or Travis Scott. But since his 2016 breakthrough, Money Man has taken a different approach. Whale Games reveals the prolific Atlanta rapper is uniquely adept at corralling the technology for his own purposes, using it to subtly enhance or make more foreboding his otherwise unwavering vocals. Most of the five-song EP finds him careening over tracks that are bright, even danceable (see especially the carefree “Misbehave”), his verses digitally tweaked just enough to sound vaguely alien. But when he settles into a graver mode, as he does on the closer “Air Holes,” the result is all the more chilling.
