Tango

Marking 100 years since Astor Piazzolla’s birth, Tango explores the composers who influenced the great Argentine tango master. In this evocative album, French virtuoso accordionist Pascal Contet pays tribute to Piazzolla with terrific performances of two of his most famous and contrasting pieces, “Oblivion” and “Libertango.” Contet surrounds them with exciting, new arrangements for orchestra and accordion of tangos by the composer’s precursors. Highlights include Eduardo Arolas’ poignant “Comme il faut” and Carlos Gardel’s “Volver,” which is surely one of the most beautiful of all tangos. Rounding off the album, too, is a new and exciting addition to the tango repertoire: French film composer Christophe Julien’s Valentino Suite, which is packed with energy and yearning passion.
