Soundgod Fest Reloaded

Soundgod Fest Reloaded

Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer Runtown has quietly worked his way into the upper echelons of Afropop with a slew of timeless, soulful, and percussive numbers which continue to showcase a welcome mixture of versatility and styles. The singer’s 2021 album Sound God Fest Reloaded finds him once again leaning heavily into Afro-Caribbean influences. He traverses cultures and soundscapes, a sonic feat that began back in 2019 when he compiled Soundgod Fest, Vol. 1. Throughout the album, Runtown slides between topics such as love, sex, identity, and hardship with all the self-conviction in the world. Tracks such as “Fuck Eh Up” and “Sativa” reverberate with an irresistible sex romp as the singer merges reggae with Afropop for joyful, danceable tunes, while other tracks such as “Mama Told Me” find the singer delivering heart-wrenching confessionals that feel like an unfiltered peek into his mind. Sound God Fest Reloaded and its architect display a level of vulnerability unheard of in previous projects, but it’s the seamless delivery of patois and English that encapsulates everything he represents—music with no boundaries or borders.
